The StoRy of Rod GenTry and His Thauth
|
Artist Jamey Barnard of Onekama and chef Kurt Harvey of Arcadia have launched “Rod Gentry’s Blanket of Love Grillin’ Thauth”, a spicy sauce for grilling, dipping, and – as Mr. Barnard puts it – guzzling. While most sane people would not guzzle a sauce with ingredients that include chipotle peppers, it is a fantastic compliment to all sorts of meats, vegetables, egg dishes, and salty snacks. “Basically, what we have here is a unique recipe from a local backwoodsman,” Barnard said, “Mr. Gentry’s ‘Thauth’ is the best on the planet, but it was always made in a poorly-washed stew pot over a burn barrel filled with scrap lumber. Harvey’s years of experience as a chef at Camp Arcadia gave us leg up in the commercial development of this unique sauce.”
“We’ve tried lots of national brands of barbeque sauce and believe this is the best on the market.” says Harvey. “I put it on everything from frittata to chips. It’s great in meatloaf, chili and barbequed pork; and, of course, it’s absolutely amazing with grilled meats and vegetables.”
Barnard notes that they’ve been working with the recluse, Rod Gentry, for years trying to get permission to make his sauce on a commercial level. But, when he tasted Chef Harvey’s cooking, he said “Let’s just bring it to the world, fellas.”
“Part of what makes it great is the quality ingredients. Local Michigan honey and maple syrup are used in it, as well as tomato paste from vine ripened tomatoes, chipotle peppers, molasses, and plenty of secret spices.” says Harvey.
So who is this Rod Gentry? According to the label:
Rod Gentry was born in the woods of Manistee County, Michigan, near the town of Arcadia. His parents were retired circus people and lived the simple life, combing the woods and roadsides for delicious meats to feed the friends and family who dropped by to stay for a meal or two. "The logging trucks did most of the hunting for us," Rod chortled, "which was handy since I wasn't allowed to shoot a gun."
To make every kind of meat taste better, Rod concocted a special sauce that he slathered on while the meat was cooking. One of his best friends, Screetch, who was hit in the mouth accidentally during his trapeze act, used to always ask, "Where that grillin' thauth at?" Word of this "Grillin Thauth" spread throughout Michigan, and soon Mr. Gentry was selling his famous Blanket of Love sauces all over the world. We still make each jar in Michigan with the highest quality ingredients. Spread the Love!
