Yardbird Sweet
Rod Gentry was born in the woods of Manistee County, Michigan, near the town of Arcadia. His parents were retired circus people who lived the simple life, combing the woods and roadsides for delicious meats to feed the friends and family who dropped by to stay for a meal or two. “The logging trucks did most of the hunting for us,” Rod chortled, “although we did have many a meal that was tenderized by a snowplow.”
To make every kind of meat and vegetable taste better, Rod developed special sauces he would slather on foods while they were being cooked.
A traveling fire-eater named Rosie the Volcano, who dated Mr. Gentry in the ’60s, would often beg Rod for a sauce with “more sweet and less heat!”
Yardbird Sweet, a nod to Rosie’s favorite jazz tune, is Rod’s gift to her and the world. Dig the sweet notes!
